How PM Surya Ghar subsidy is calculated
Central subsidy slabs (residential, as of May 2026):
• Up to 2 kW: ₹30,000 per kW (1 kW = ₹30,000; 2 kW = ₹60,000)
• 3rd kW: +₹18,000 (so 3 kW = ₹78,000)
• 3 kW and above: capped at ₹78,000 (no extra above 3 kW; residential eligibility up to 10 kW)

Rooftop solar in Mizoram: the Power & Electricity Department and net metering

Unlike most states, Mizoram does not have a separate corporatised DISCOM. Electricity is supplied directly by the state government's Power & Electricity Department (P&ED), which also handles rooftop solar applications, net metering and the PM Surya Ghar rollout through the state's unified solar portal. So the same office you pay your bill to is the one you approach to go solar.

How net metering works here

P&ED offers net metering for residential rooftop systems: your panels export surplus daytime units to the grid, a bi-directional meter logs import and export, and you are billed on the net. Domestic tariffs are telescopic slabs of roughly 4.85 to 7.15 rupees per unit as usage climbs, so we use about 6 rupees per unit as a representative figure. Self-consumed solar offsets your slab rate, which is worth more than the export credit, so sizing to your daytime load is sensible.

Sunshine and the monsoon reality

Mizoram's hilly terrain gets decent sun for much of the year, but the June to September south-west monsoon brings extended cloudy, rainy spells that cut generation. We use a moderate yield of about 4 units per kW per day as an annual average, which already accounts for those wet months. PM Surya Ghar subsidy

The national PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana pays 30,000 rupees per kW for the first 2 kW, adds 18,000 for the third kW, and caps at 78,000 rupees for systems of 3 kW and above (allowed up to 10 kW), paid as a direct bank transfer after commissioning, with collateral-free loans near 7 percent. A quick worked example

Take a 3 kW system in Aizawl. At about 4 units per kW per day it makes roughly 12 units daily, near 360 units a month averaged over the year.
