3 Subsidy & state top-up

Rooftop solar in Delhi: DISCOMs, net metering and real savings
Delhi homes are served by three power distribution companies: BSES Rajdhani (BRPL) in south and west Delhi, BSES Yamuna (BYPL) in east and central Delhi, and Tata Power-DDL in north Delhi. All three offer gross and net metering for grid-tied rooftop solar, so units your panels export are credited against the units you import. For a typical residential system, net metering is the setting that makes solar pay, because Delhi households consume a good share of daytime generation directly and bank the surplus.
Delhi tariffs and what you save
Delhi residential tariffs are slab-based and, before any government electricity subsidy, upper slabs run in the region of ₹7-8 per unit plus fixed charges. Because avoided grid power is valued at your marginal tariff, we use about ₹7 per unit as a representative figure. Sunshine and generation
Delhi averages roughly 4.3-4.5 peak sun hours a day across the year, so each 1 kW of well-oriented panels generates about 4.3 units daily, or around 1,550 units a year. PM Surya Ghar national subsidy
The national PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana gives ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. It applies to systems up to 10 kW and is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer to your bank account after the system is commissioned and inspected. Delhi Solar Policy 2024 and the GBI
Delhi layers its own Solar Policy 2024 on top. Its headline feature for homes is a generation-based incentive (GBI): a per-unit payment for every unit your rooftop generates, reported around ₹3 per unit for systems up to 3 kW and ₹2 per unit for 3-10 kW, typically for five years. This is a per-kWh reward for generation, not a per-kW capital grant, so our state top-up field is kept at zero and the GBI shows up as extra cash flow rather than a lower upfront price. Reports of an added Delhi capital subsidy have varied, so treat both figures as provisional and verify the current Delhi policy on the official portal before you commit.
Worked example
Take a 3 kW system in south Delhi on BRPL, generating about 4,600 units a year. At ₹7 per unit, that offset is worth roughly ₹32,000 a year. PM Surya Ghar returns up to ₹78,000 upfront, and a ₹3 per unit GBI on 4,600 units could add close to ₹13,000 a year in the early years, sharply shortening payback.
