Rooftop solar in Rajasthan
Rajasthan is one of India's sunniest states, and that shows up directly in generation. Where a typical northern rooftop returns about 4.2 units per kW per day, well-sited systems across Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Udaipur commonly deliver 4.7 to 5.0 units per kW per day - roughly 1,700 to 1,800 units per kW each year. More sunshine means a smaller system covers the same bill, or the same system clears it faster.
DISCOMs and net metering
Three distribution companies serve the state: JVVNL around Jaipur, AVVNL around Ajmer and Udaipur, and JdVVNL around Jodhpur and Bikaner. Residential net metering lets you export daytime surplus and draw at night, with credits carried forward and settled under RERC rules. In late 2025 Rajasthan revised its rooftop settlement tariffs (around 3.26/kWh for net metering in some orders), so confirm the current export terms with your DISCOM before sizing for heavy export. Tariffs and how PM Surya Ghar applies
Domestic tariffs in the higher slabs sit near 7/unit, so self-consumed solar displaces costly grid units. The national PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana pays 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus 18,000 for the 3rd kW, capping the central subsidy at 78,000 for 3 kW and above, with net metering available up to 10 kW. Any Rajasthan state top-up?
Rajasthan has historically promoted solar actively, but we could not confirm a current, active per-kW state cash subsidy stacked on top of PM Surya Ghar for 2025-2026. Some listings quote an extra amount that appears unverified. Treat the central subsidy as your reliable figure and verify any state-level incentive with RRECL (rrecl.in) or your DISCOM before counting on it.
A worked example
A 3 kW system in Jaipur might generate about 5,100 to 5,300 units a year thanks to strong irradiance, worth roughly 36,000 at 7/unit. With 78,000 central subsidy against a gross cost near 1.7 lakh, net outlay lands close to 90,000 and payback often falls under three years - faster than in most states because of the higher yield.
