1 Your electricity

Enter your 6-digit PIN to auto-fill your district's average daily generation from NASA satellite data. You can always edit it below.

₹/unit

Indian residential tariffs typically run ₹6–₹9 per unit and rise every year. Check a recent bill for your exact slab rate.

2 Cost & generation

₹/kW

A complete on-grid setup (panels, inverter, structure, wiring, installation) runs about ₹50,000–₹60,000 per kW in 2026. Tier-1 brands (Tata, Adani, Waaree) cost a little more.

units/kW/day

Most of India gets about 4 units (kWh) per kW per day on average; sunnier states (Rajasthan, Gujarat) can reach 4.5–5.

3 Subsidy & state top-up

Central subsidy: ₹30,000/kW up to 2 kW, +₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000 for any system 3 kW and above (residential, up to 10 kW). As of May 2026 (per MNRE). Always confirm current rates at pmsuryaghar.gov.in before applying.

₹/kW

Some states add their own subsidy on top of the central one (e.g. Gujarat has offered ₹10,000/kW). Enter your state's per-kW top-up if any — leave 0 if unsure. Verify with your DISCOM.

How PM Surya Ghar subsidy is calculated
Central subsidy slabs (residential, as of May 2026):
• Up to 2 kW: ₹30,000 per kW (1 kW = ₹30,000; 2 kW = ₹60,000)
• 3rd kW: +₹18,000 (so 3 kW = ₹78,000)
• 3 kW and above: capped at ₹78,000 (no extra above 3 kW; residential eligibility up to 10 kW)

Net cost = system cost − central subsidy − state top-up. Annual savings = annual units generated × tariff (capped at your usage). Payback = net cost ÷ annual savings; the free-electricity date is today plus the payback period. Rooftop solar in Assam: APDCL, net metering and savings

Assam's electricity is distributed by APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Limited), the state DISCOM that handles connections, metering and rooftop approvals across the Brahmaputra valley and the hills. Residential systems connect to the grid under AERC net-metering regulations, so the surplus units you export run a bi-directional meter backwards and are credited against the units you import.

Tariffs and what you save

APDCL bills homes on rising slabs. Low usage sits near ₹4-6 per unit while mid and upper slabs climb past ₹7 per unit, so we take about ₹6.5 per unit as a representative value for the grid power your panels displace. Each self-consumed unit avoids that retail rate, so sizing to your own load saves more than exporting surplus, which settles lower. Model the flow with the on-grid solar calculator.

Sunshine in the North East

Assam is one of India's cloudier, wetter states, with a long monsoon and frequent overcast skies, so peak sun hours are modest at roughly 3.9 a day. Each 1 kW of panels then generates about 3.9 units daily, near 1,420 units a year, lower than the sunny plains but still worthwhile against high tariffs. Right-size your array with the system size calculator.

PM Surya Ghar and Assam's special-category status

The national PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana pays ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above, up to 10 kW, released by Direct Benefit Transfer after commissioning. Assam is classed as a special-category state, so it may qualify for enhanced central assistance beyond the standard slabs. That extra amount is not a confirmed fixed figure here, so verify current terms on pmsuryaghar.gov.in before you budget; our calculator keeps the state top-up at zero. Loans near 7 percent cover the balance, which you can check with the solar loan EMI calculator.

Worked example

A 3 kW system in Guwahati generates roughly 4,270 units a year. At ₹6.5 per unit that offsets about ₹27,750 of grid power annually. With up to ₹78,000 back from PM Surya Ghar, the net cost after subsidy often pays back in a handful of years. Start from the India solar calculator and treat every figure as indicative until confirmed with APDCL.

Frequently asked questions

Which DISCOM handles rooftop solar in Assam?

APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Limited) is the state DISCOM. It processes your net-metering application, installs the bi-directional meter and approves grid connection for residential rooftop systems across Assam.

Why is generation lower in Assam than in western states?

Assam has a long monsoon and frequent cloud cover, so peak sun hours are around 3.9 a day versus 4.5 or more in sunnier states. A 1 kW system makes about 3.9 units daily here, so panels still pay off but yields are more modest.

Does Assam get extra subsidy as a special-category state?

Assam is a PM Surya Ghar special-category state, which may attract enhanced central assistance above the standard ₹30,000 per kW slabs. It is not confirmed as a fixed figure, so verify current terms on pmsuryaghar.gov.in; our calculator keeps the state top-up at zero to stay honest.

How does APDCL net metering settle my exports?

A bi-directional meter credits exported units against imported units, and credits reduce your next bills. Surplus at the settlement period is bought back at a lower rate, so it is best to self-consume as much of your generation as you can.
