Rooftop solar in Madhya Pradesh: DISCOMs, net metering and savings
Madhya Pradesh distributes power through three companies: MPPKVVCL (Poorv, the east zone around Jabalpur), MPMKVVCL (Madhya, the central zone around Bhopal) and MPPaKVVCL (Paschim, the west zone around Indore). Residential rooftop solar is grid-connected under MPERC net metering regulations, so units you export are credited against units you draw. Bi-directional metering tracks both flows, and unused credit is carried through the settlement year.
Net metering and settlement
Under the current MPERC framework, residential net metering is available up to generous size limits, well beyond what most homes need. Credits offset your next bills rather than paying cash, and any surplus at the annual settlement is typically bought back at a low average pooled cost of power, around ₹2 per unit. Tariffs, sunshine and generation
MP residential tariffs are slab-based, with mid and upper slabs commonly around ₹6-7 per unit plus fixed charges, so we use about ₹6.5 per unit as a representative value for avoided grid power. The state enjoys strong sunshine, roughly 4.6 peak sun hours a day, meaning each 1 kW of panels generates about 4.6 units daily, or near 1,680 units a year. PM Surya Ghar subsidy in MP
The national PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana provides ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above, for systems up to 10 kW. It is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer after commissioning and inspection, and low-interest loans near 7 percent help cover the balance; check instalments with the solar loan EMI calculator. Madhya Pradesh does not currently add a confirmed separate per-kW state capital subsidy for residential rooftop on top of this, so our state top-up is set to zero.
